Jar with a horse design of iron glaze
Hara Kiyoshi is a potter from Hikawa-chô, Hikawa-gun, Shimane Prefecture. He studied under Ishiguro Munemaro and Shimizu Uichi, learning the fundamentals of pottery, mastered pottery techniques including Chinese pottery, and in 2005, he was recognized as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for his work on tetsuyu-tôki (iron glazed ceramics). This composition makes use of the tetsuyu (iron glazing) technique, using a double application of iron glaze in the two colors of black and brown to express the silhouette of a horse. Adding ingenuity to traditional glazing techniques, he displays a style that is both composed and refined.
