Raden Saleh (1811-1880) was Indonesia’s first modern painter, renowned for his Romantic-style landscapes & dramatic animal scenes blending European techniques with Javanese themes. A pioneer whose portraits captured colonial life and Indonesian nobility.
Portrait of Johannes Graaf van den Bosch (1780-1844). Governor-General (1830-33). Headpiece, standing with the right arm leaned on the pedestal of a bust with the portrait of King Willem I. In the background a landscape with the palace in Buitenzorg. Part of a series of portraits of the governors-general of the former Dutch East Indies.
