      The Leeuwarden Series: Members of the House of Nassau Adolf of Nassau was born in 1540 as the fourth son of Willem the Rich and Juliana, Countess of Stolberg-Wernigerode. After studying at the University of Wittenberg he enlisted in the army of Emperor Charles V. In 1567 he embraced the politics of his brother William the Silent, and in 1568, together with his brother Lodewijk, he attacked the Spanish forces of the Duke of Alva in Groningerland. They were victorious at the Battle of Heiligerlee, which marked the beginning of the Eighty Years’ War, but it cost the 27-year-old Adolf his life.41 See entry SK-A-524 for a discussion of the style, attribution, prototype and dating of this portrait.
