Under the leadership of the artistic director Arnold Krog, Royal Copenhagen had started a new art movement in 1885, which was essentially influenced by the international trend of Japonism.The tall cylindrical vase refers in form and decoration to East Asian models. The smooth-walled body of the vase serves here as a picture carrier. Carp and iris are traditional Japanese decorative motifs, which are also underlaid with subtle meanings. The wild carp is seen in Japan as a symbol of vitality and resistance, it is a symbol of fertility. The iris is a symbol of victory because of its plant form.
