In 1840/1841 the Ruskins undertake a tour of France, Italy and Switzerland. After spending most of December in Rome they arrive in Naples on the 9th January 1841 and stay until 25 February. In his diary for this time Ruskin keeps a detailed record of his travels in and around Naples and makes frequent mention of Vesuvius.
