In 1610, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu called for the construction of a castle in Nagoya, which this painting depicts as it stood in 1933. This depiction is of particular importance because it confirms how the castle appeared before it burned down during a World War II air raid. At the time, the castle’s moat, which is now a plaza, was surrounded by cherry blossom trees. In this painting, Hida conveys the magnificent grandeur of the castle at the height of spring.
