cornelis engelsz (1575 – 1650)

Cornelis Engelsz (1575-1650) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for detailed realism, genre scenes & portraiture. Influenced by Rembrandt, his work reflects everyday life and the emerging middle class.

Gerrit Willemsz van Schoterbosch was a son of Willem Fransz van Schoterbosch. He was a town councillor of Haarlem and, beginning in 1588, served a number of terms as burgomaster. According to Ekkart, the lost prototype for the present painting, which would have been dated 1605, may have been the work of Frans Pietersz de Grebber.13 Jonathan Bikker, 2007 See Bibliography and Rijksmuseum painting catalogues See Key to abbreviations and Acknowledgements This entry was published in J.
