Illuminated chalcographic print depicting the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 by the Anglo-Dutch fleet, during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13). Its strategic location made it an important stronghold that enabled communication between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The rock of Gibraltar has been British since its capture and the subsequent ratification of the Treaty of Utrecht.This copper plate was engraved in Hamburg by Johann August Corvinius (1683–1738) and its composition was designed by Jeremias Wolf (1663–1724), based on originals by Paulus Decker.
