The Story Behind the Painting
The
Mass at Bolsena depicts an incident said to have taken place in 1263. A Bohemian priest, doubting the doctrine of transubstantiation, celebrated mass at Bolsena, where the bread of the eucharist began to bleed. The blood spouted from the host and fell onto the tablecloth in the shape of a cross, reconverting the priest. This event led to the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi by Pope Urban IV in 1264.
