The Leeuwarden Series: Members of the House of Nassau The seventh son of Jan the Elder, Lodewijk Günther studied in Geneva, Basel and France. After concluding his studies, he took part in the war against Spain under the command of his brother Willem Lodewijk. He fought with the Dutch forces in France in 1594, and distinguished himself at the head of the English troops in the joint Anglo-Dutch expedition to Cadiz in 1596. He followed Willem Lodewijk and Prince Maurits in their military campaigns, fighting in the Siege of Rijnberk (1597) and the Achterhoek (1598), where he led a cavalry offensive at Ulft and was wounded near Bislich. In 1599, he was appointed lieutenant-general of the States cavalry, and in this capacity took part in the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600), the unsuccessful attempt to capture ’s-Hertogenbosch (1603) and the Siege of Sluis (1604). Shortly after Sluis was captured, he fell gravely ill and died in the military camp stationed outside the town.43 The prototype has not been located. A copy of the present portrait was executed by Johannes Tideman for the Statenzaal of the Provinciehuis in Groningen in 1671.44 Jonathan Bikker, 2007 See Bibliography and Rijksmuseum painting catalogues See Key to abbreviations and Acknowledgements This entry was published in J.
