The Leeuwarden Series: Commanders-in-Chief of the Forces of the States-General Anthonis van Utenhove was a scion of an old aristocratic family from Ghent. In 1595 he was appointed captain of an infantry division in the army of the States-General. He distinguished himself during the defence of Ostend (1601-04), which led to his governorship of that town and promotion to colonel of the Utrecht regiment. In the same year (1604), he became Lord of Rijnesteyn. In 1606, he was made governor of Doesburg, and later of Emmerich (1614-25).43 Although it carries Paulus Moreelse’s monogram, the quality of this portrait is not good enough to assign it to him. Without explaining how Van Ravesteyn would have had access to the prototype, Domela Nieuwenhuis has suggested that it was probably executed in his workshop after a lost portrait by Moreelse.44 It seems more likely, however, that the present portrait was executed by an assistant in Moreelse’s studio.
