Stanze Vaticane - The Liberation of St Peter (detail) [02]

The Stanze Vaticane - The Liberation of St Peter (detail) [02] is a renowned fresco painting created by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio Da Urbino) in 1514. This masterpiece is part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms known as the Stanze di Raffaello, located in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

Historical Context

The painting depicts a biblical episode from the Acts of the Apostles (12:5-12), where the apostle is miraculously saved from prison by an angel while the guards lie sleeping. This scene is a reference to Julius II, who before being elected Pope was the titular cardinal of St Peter in Chains.

Composition and Style

The composition of the Liberation of St Peter is divided into three scenes, arranged symmetrically around the feigned architecture and stairs. The central scene shows the angel waking Peter, while on the right, the angel guides him past the sleeping guards. On the left side, one guard has noticed the light generated by the angel and wakes a comrade, pointing up to the miraculously illumined cell. Raphael's mastery of perspective and color is evident in this work, as he confronts the divine light of the angel with that of the dawn, the moon, the torches, and their reflections on the armor.

Significance

The Liberation of St Peter is a significant work in Raphael's oeuvre, showcasing his exceptional skills as a painter and his ability to convey complex narratives through visual means. It is also an important example of the Renaissance style, characterized by its harmonious composition, idealized figures, and naturalistic representation of light and color.
