Lajkonik with his Entourage outside an Inn on Zwierzyniecka Street in Kraków

This outdoor photograph on a gelatin silver glass plate negative was taken in Kraków by Walery Eliasz Radzikowski. Dated to 1898, it depicts the Lajkonik hobby horse, probably in front of one of the inns on Zwierzyniecka Street in Kraków. We see the Lajkonik in his old costume, before the introduction of a new one, designed by Stanisław Wyspiański in 1903. The Lajkonik is accompanied by his own band of musicians (called Mlaskoty) and a party of Włóczki (rafters), wearing the traditional costumes of the Krakowiak Folk, some of them dressed up as “Tartars,” carrying banners and pennants on long shafts. There is a standard bearer among them. A group of onlookers is also there. One of the attendees of the procession has an 18th-century karabela sabre at his side, in all probability an authentic one. In the centre of the scene pictured here, a small dog is looking at the Lajkonik. On the right, a man in a peaked cap, holding a cigarette to his lips, is gazing at the camera.
