In the middle the Pharisee kneels before the altar, on the left the arrogant Pharisee leaves the temple with a devil, on the right the publicans leave the temple with an angel. The canvas is part of a series of parables painted for the Lutheran church in Leiden (see also Nos SK-A-2958 and SK-A-2960).
