Though Lungren’s work focuses primarily on landscapes of the desert Southwest, he also painted remote peaks of the Sierra and Rockies. Seats of the Mighty depicts the eastern side of the Colorado Rockies between Trinidad and Colorado Springs. Born in Maryland, Lungren grew up in Ohio. After studying briefly in Cincinnati, he moved to Philadelphia, where he trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. After continuing his training in Paris, he began his career in New York City as a magazine illustrator, but in 1892 went west under the auspices of the railroad. After that, he focused on Native American subjects and landscapes. He moved to Los Angeles in 1903 and four years later settled permanently in Santa Barbara.
