Robert Cheseman

Introduction to the Northern Renaissance Art Movement

The Northern Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement that emerged in Europe north of the Alps during the 15th century. This period saw the development of distinct national and localized movements, including the German, French, English, Low Countries, and Polish Renaissances, each with unique attributes.

The Artist and His Style

Hans Holbein the Younger was a German artist and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. He is best known as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century, with his works reflecting the influence of Italian, French, and Dutch artistic trends, as well as Renaissance humanism. Robert Cheseman, painted in 1533, is an oil and tempera on oak masterpiece by Holbein. The painting (59 × 62.5 cm) is housed in the Mauritshuis, The Hague.

Legacy of Hans Holbein the Younger

Holbein's early career was spent mainly in Basel, where he painted murals and religious works, designed stained glass and printed books, and produced portraits. His international fame grew with his portrait of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, a renowned humanist. During the Reformation in Basel, Holbein served both traditional religious patrons and reformist clients, creating works that showcased his unique combined aesthetic.
