Explore the captivating landscapes & allegorical interiors of Jan Kamphuijsen (1760-1841), a Dutch painter known for his serene scenes and theatrical compositions.
As the inscription mentions at the bottom, the subject of this painting is February. The sign of the constellation fish is depicted on a relief with a black fond. The boat is possibly derived from carpet series Le Douze Mois Grotesques, designed by Claude III Audran (1658-1734) around 1709, which was printed by Jean Audran (1667-1756). On the picture with the first two months a similar boat can be seen in February. Instead of Neptunes, the guardian god of February, the painting shows the sea god Okeanos. It is recognizable by its long beard and horns and is as usual surrounded by snakes and fish. This painting is part of a series of pilaser panels (sk-a-4142 to sk-a-4150), commissioned by Josephus Augustus Brentano (1753-1821) for his house Herengracht 544.
