Kitahara Shikajiro (1829-1939) was born in Mizuma County, Fukuoka Prefecture, graduated from Denshukan Junior High School in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo to enter the Tokyo Fine Arts School and studied sculpture under Takamura Koun, thereafter, started to teach at the school. In 1922, he became an assistant professor of Sculptures and Crafts Department at Tokyo Crafts High School. His works were accepted repeatedly by the Imperial Exhibition and the Japan Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition.According to an article of the newspaper ‘Yanagawa Shinpo’ in 1919; an exhibition of the sculptures of Kitahara Shikajiro was held at Kawano-Yakukan building in Yanagawa; and thirty-five of his works were displayed; one of them, titled ‘Goddess of Rice Plant,’ was exhibited by the Tachibana family.The sculpture stated in the article is considered to be the one ‘Goddess of the Harvest’ displayed here.
