Drivning Cows out of he Cowhouse

In this large painting, Otto Bache (1839-1927) depicts a herd of cows being driven out of a cowshed on an autumn morning. Two cows in the foreground stand out: a white cow that looks as though it wants to leave the herd and a brindled cow lifting its head and looking towards a point outside the picture frame – perhaps at the artist. The painting is so lifelike and realistic that it is almost possible to hear the cows mooing and smell their acrid odour. With Christiansborg as a framework, the painting could also be interpreted as the people who, as pliable voters, must be enticed and coerced into going to the polls. However, there are a few brighter citizens who sometimes question political decision-making processes and the policies pursued. Author: Lisbeth Bonde, M.A and art critic. Photographer: Torben Eskerod.
