Tani Bunchō (1763-1841) was a Japanese literati painter known for eclectic landscapes & portraits. He blended Chinese, Japanese, & Western styles, celebrated for idealized scenes & artistic innovation.
A playful sampling of works by Edo"s leading early nineteenth-century artists and literati is arranged here into irregular "paving stones." The many auspicious motifs and spring-themed poems suggest that this collection was made at the lunar New Year.
