The Battle of Livorno, 14 March 1653: episode from the First English Sea War (1652-54). Images include warships: the Moon (or Half Moon), Sampson, White Elephant, Virgin of Enkhuizen/Enchuiser Maegt, Levant Merchant, Seven Provinces, Bonaventura, Paragon, Sun, Eendracht, Julius Caesar, Fenix, Leopard and Mary. In the foreground the sinking ship Sampson with the crew leaving the ship. The list (in the middle below) contains a cartouche cartouche with a legendary description of the numbers and capitals of the vessels depicted and what happened with them.

Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) was a master Dutch Golden Age marine painter renowned for highly detailed, realistic seascapes and naval scenes. His work with his father captured pivotal moments in Anglo-Dutch maritime history.
