Half-length portrait of President Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-1893), 19th President of the United States. President Hayes is seated with his hands placed before him. In a diary entry of August 5, 1877, President Hayes recorded that artist William Garle Browne had recently completed a bust portrait of him as a study for a full-length portrait and praised it as ”perhaps, the best yet painted.” In addition to his sittings with President Hayes, Browne relied on a photograph by Mathew B.
