King Gojong was the 26th King of the Joseon period, and when he ruled it was very turbulent period in Korean history. He changed his title from king to emperor in 1897. He sent a secret envoy to the Hague in 1907 to inform the world that the annexation by Japan was illegal. However, he was dethroned after this envoy. His death which was known as a poisoning initiated the 1919 Independence Movement in Korea. These letters were written by Gojong andthe contents are as such: In order to have a peaceful family, the best thing to do is be obedient to your parents and then keep the fellowship between your brothers and sisters.
