Nora Herz throwing a jug on a potter’s wheel

This photograph shows Nora Herz at work in her studio and was taken by press photographer Herbert Sonnenfeld. From 1933 to 1938, Sonnenfeld documented Jewish community institutions, as well as cultural and sporting events. Some of his photographs of Herz were used to illustrate an article in the Jewish Central-Verein-Zeitung about the process of making ceramic objects. The article appeared on August 31, 1935 in the newspaper supplement called “Das Blatt der deutschen Jüdin” (“Pages for the German-Jewish Woman”). The text, entitled “Ton in der Töpferin Hand” (“Clay in the hands of the female potter”) was written by Herz herself and encouraged readers to take up the art of pottery.
