Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853) was a Dutch painter renowned for historical scenes of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, portraits & allegorical works. Director of the Royal Academy & Rijksmuseum. Influenced by events like the Battle of Waterloo.
Portrait of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Probably a repeat of the portrait study made for the large canvas of the Battle of Waterloo completed in 1824.
