The virtual space of today has enabled the existence of a utopia, a perfect world where everything is in opposite to the real world. In The Flight of the Hen, Albert Merino stages a process where a desirable, ideal policy on public art is realized. With a specific setting of time, space, organization, and characters, the video is produced with an excellent visual style and directorship. Although the work narrates a fictional story of solidarity among artists that takes place in Barcelona, it induces viewers to doubt whether the story staged in the work is real. In addition to raising confusion and suspicion, the work even transforms a dramatic tension into a solid experience for the viewers. Through a well-staged fictional account, The Flight of the Hen raises a question on how solidarity among individuals can impose positive influence on the public policy as specific forms of media are developed with the passage of time. In this work, the most contested issue on contemporary media is delivered in the form of comedy, with questions done in an entertaining yet insightful way.(Photo : Nils Clauss)

Biografía del artista

Albert Merino Castillo: Architecting Perception Through Digital Collage

Albert Merino Castillo (born Barcelona, Spain, 1979) occupies a distinctive space within the realm of contemporary video art, establishing himself as an architect of perception—a creator who deliberately dismantles conventional visual frameworks to stimulate contemplation and provoke intellectual curiosity. His artistic journey began with foundational studies in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, equipping him with a critical perspective honed by engagement with seminal thinkers like Walter Benjamin, whose explorations of aura and reproducibility illuminated the transformative potential of technological advancements on cultural experience. Merino’s artistic language is fundamentally rooted in the concept of digital collage—a technique he employs not merely as a stylistic choice but as a deliberate methodological strategy. Rejecting simplistic representation, he actively reshapes images—blurring boundaries between reality and illusion—to generate artworks that operate on multiple levels of interpretation. This approach mirrors his fascination with architectural structures – extending beyond physical buildings to encompass the conceptual frameworks that govern our understanding of space and communication. As architects design spaces for habitation, Merino meticulously arranges elements within his videos to guide the viewer’s gaze and elicit emotional responses, mirroring a broader preoccupation with disrupting established norms and fostering innovative visual discourse. “The Flight of the Hen/Installation view” serves as an exemplary demonstration of this stylistic hallmark. Presented as an immersive installation, the piece leverages layered imagery—photographs interwoven with textures and geometric shapes—to generate a dynamic interplay between foreground and background. This deliberate spatial manipulation isn’t accidental; it underscores Merino’s conviction that art possesses the capacity to destabilize preconceived notions and ignite intellectual engagement. The resulting visual experience compels viewers to actively navigate the artwork's dimensions, uncovering hidden connections within its composition – mirroring Benjamin’s assertion that aura diminishes as images become reproducible. Influenced by artists who similarly interrogated the relationship between image and viewer—particularly those experimenting with photomontage and conceptual art—Merino’s artistic trajectory reflects a broader engagement with intellectual currents shaping the latter half of the 20th century. His exploration of architectural principles—specifically manipulating perspective and spatial organization—solidifies his position as a significant voice in contemporary artistic discourse, mirroring Benjamin's critique of mass culture and its impact on individual experience. Throughout his career, Merino has garnered recognition for his innovative approach to video art, demonstrating unwavering commitment to experimentation and conceptual rigor. His work has been showcased in prestigious exhibitions across Europe—including Los Angeles Art Fair, the Festival Madatac at Reina Sofia Museum, the Latin Videoart Festival of New York, the Collogne off Nomade’s Festival, or the Biennal of Art from Wroclaw—solidifying his reputation as a pioneering figure within the field. His dedication to pushing artistic boundaries ensures that Albert Merino Castillo continues to inspire dialogue and provoke reflection on the role of visual media in shaping our understanding of the world.
