Biografía del artista

Andrey Gorbunov: Bridging Monumental Sculpture and Theoretical Physics

Andrey Gorbunov’s artistic journey began in Dzerzhinsk, Russia, where he was born in 1979. From a young age, he demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for both visual arts and scientific inquiry—a duality that would profoundly shape his creative vision. His formal education commenced at Nizhny Novgorod Art School, followed by studies at St. Petersburg’s Mukhina Academy, culminating in his current role as Professor of Monumental Sculpture within the academy's prestigious department. This dual academic grounding provides a fascinating backdrop to understanding his distinctive artistic style—a perspective that elevates his work beyond mere aesthetics into a realm of intellectual exploration. Gorbunov’s sculptural practice is characterized by an uncompromising commitment to geometric precision and conceptual rigor—elements that resonate deeply with principles derived from mathematics and physics. He doesn't merely sculpt; he investigates, dissects, and reimagines forms through the lens of theoretical frameworks. This approach isn't simply stylistic choice but a fundamental philosophical underpinning of his work. His sculptures are often monumental in scale, conveying powerful narratives about human existence and exploring complex relationships between form and function. The resulting pieces possess an undeniable beauty alongside intellectual depth—a harmonious blend that speaks to the core of his artistic philosophy. The artist’s fascination with ferroelectricity—the ability of certain materials to exhibit polarization when subjected to an electric field—and negative piezoelectricity—where deformation generates electricity—extends beyond the studio into his research pursuits. He holds a doctorate in Applied Mathematics and Physics, focusing on these phenomena within thioamide-based materials. This scientific background informs his artistic process, influencing his understanding of material properties and translating into sculptural explorations that grapple with concepts of energy transfer and structural stability. It’s as if he's attempting to visualize the invisible forces governing our physical world—a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between science and art. As Alexander Borovsky eloquently noted in 2017, “The mental position in Gorbunov’s works is very active. The anthropologic factor in his works is rather objective than subjective. Gorbunov is fully concentrated on body representation without any sign of symbiosis of anthropologic stripe. What is more, this is a representation which saves the memetics – but in mode of mental mediations. This transparent readability and the mediacy are by nature a pattern of search articulation. The artist often uses an appropriation: the scientificity is provided by means of corresponding signs, symbols, charts and even tools. However he has his own special graphical technique. Gorbunov creates a graphic of heraldic stripe – the generalized drawn symbols seeming to secure the search area…” His work has garnered recognition internationally, appearing in private collections across Russia, Europe, and North America—a testament to the universal appeal of his artistic ideas. This exposure speaks volumes about his ability to communicate profound concepts through evocative sculptural forms. Gorbunov’s sculptures are not merely aesthetically pleasing; they invite contemplation on fundamental questions concerning materiality, perception, and the interplay between science and art. He currently serves as Professor at Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation, demonstrating a continued dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity and pushing boundaries within his field—a commitment that underscores his belief in the transformative power of interdisciplinary collaboration.
