At a young age, Subhuti was wise beyond his years but he had a bad temper. After he heard the Buddha’s teaching on the harmful effects of anger, he repented and became the bhiksu most reluctant to argue with anyone. Once, when the Buddha returned from Trayastrimsa Heaven, where he taught his mother the Dharma, Utpalavarna Bhiksuni utilized her supernatural powers and became the first to receive the Buddha’s physical body. However, the Buddha indicated that due to Subhuti’s contemplation and understanding of emptiness at Vulture Peak, he was actually the first to receive the Buddha’s Dharma body. He was known to be foremost in understanding emptiness.
