Nicholas Chevalier (1828 - 1902) fue un artista ruso nacido en San Petersburgo, hijo de Louis Chevalier y su esposa rusa. Su padre emigró de Vaud, Suiza, para convertirse en administrador de las propiedades del príncipe Wittgenstein, asesor de Nicolás I, y en 1845 regresó a Suiza con su hijo pintor. Nicolas estudió pintura y arquitectura en Lausanne y Múnich donde ayudó con los planos del Palacio Ludwig I en Baviera.

Chevalier se trasladó a Londres en 1851 donde trabajó como ilustrador en litografía y acuarela. También diseñó una fuente que fue construida en los terrenos reales de Osborne para la Reina Victoria, y dos de sus pinturas fueron expuestas en la Academia en 1852. Estudios adicionales en Roma precedieron su traslado a Australia a finales de 1854.
