Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Disney Interactive Studios in 2013, Disney Infinity represents an evolution in hybrid gaming. This action-adventure sandbox game allows players to combine their favorite Disney and Pixar characters in a virtual playground of their own making. Like Activision?s Skylanders, Disney Infinity melds electronic gaming with physical figures. Players collect Disney Infinity characters, represented by small plastic statues, which are placed on an Infinity Base. This base connects to the gaming console, allowing the figures to appear and interact in-game. The base allows for up to two figures at a time, as well as combinations of circular and hexagonal Power Discs. These include Ability Discs, which provide characters with stat bonuses and extra abilities; Toy Discs, which add objects such as weapons and vehicles; and Customization Discs, which allow players to alter the actual game environment and create a completely unique playing area.Disney Infinity contains two gameplay modes: Play Set and Toy Box. In Play Set mode, gamers follow a specific set of adventures focused on characters from a single franchise. In Toy Box mode, players build the game from the ground up, creating their own adventures using characters from as many franchises as they like.Disney Infinity continues to expand the sets and characters available for play. As of 2014, sets include characters from such movies as Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters Inc., Cars, Toy Story, and The Incredibles. Disney also released a sequel, Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, which features heroes from The Avengers, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
