The Weaver of Memory: The Soulful Artistry of aluaiy kaumakan

To encounter the work of aluaiy kaumakan is to step into a living tapestry where the threads of personal identity and ancestral heritage are inextricably entwined. Born in 1971 in Pingtung County, Taiwan, kaumakan belongs to a leading noble family of the Paiwan Nation, specifically from the Paridrayan Community. Her artistic journey is not merely a career but a profound continuation of her lineage. Growing up amidst the rich cultural landscape of the Paiwan people, she was immersed from childhood in the sight of traditional clothing and the intricate rhythms of indigenous jewelry. This early exposure to the tactile beauty of her culture laid the foundation for what would become a sophisticated practice of textile sculpture and installation art—a medium through which she explores the delicate pulse of female consciousness and the enduring strength of her community.

The evolution of kaumakan’s creative vision is marked by a transition from the lush, majestic imagery of her early years toward a more introspective and communal focus. This shift was catalyzed by the profound tragedy of 2009, when the devastating Typhoon Morakot struck her village, forcing her people to relocate to the Rinari community. This environmental upheaval did more than displace a population; it threatened the very fabric of their cultural continuity. In response, kaumakan’s work transformed into a vessel for healing and documentation. Her art became an act of resistance against forgetting, utilizing the Lemikalik technique—a process of winding strands of found fabric into cords that are then looped into concentric circles—to mirror the resilience of a people rebuilding their lives from the remnants of loss.

Materiality and the Language of Connection

Kaumakan’s mastery lies in her ability to transform humble, organic materials into evocative sculptural forms that breathe with life. She skillfully manipulates fibers such as cotton, hemp, and silk, often integrating copper wire and glass beads to introduce texture, weight, and a sense of movement. These materials are never chosen by chance; they serve as symbolic conduits for themes of interconnectedness and the cyclical rhythms of nature. In her hands, textiles become more than fabric—they become metaphors for the human heart and the spreading vines that connect different parts of the land, mimicking the spread of nerves and capillaries across the skin.

Her recent installations often feature a participatory element that bridges the gap between artist and community. Through projects like Semasipu – Remembering Our Intimacies, she has returned to her ancestral village to collect cultural belongings, using a rubbing process to print these sacred objects onto silk. This method allows her to reimagine ancestral earthenware pots, such as the dredredan, in woven form, effectively translating stone and clay into the soft, tactile language of thread. By initiating weaving workshops that function as unofficial women’s councils, she has expanded her practice into ambitious, encompassing installations that celebrate the role of women as both independent individuals and the essential pillars of their heritage.

A Legacy of Resilience and Global Recognition

The significance of aluaiy kaumakan’s work extends far beyond the borders of Taiwan, reaching a global stage where her narratives of displacement and recovery resonate with universal truths. Her ability to articulate the subtle pulsations of life through interdisciplinary art has earned her prestigious accolades, including the First Prize in Visual Arts at the 2018 Pulima Art Awards. Her presence in the international contemporary art circuit is marked by participation in some of the world's most esteemed exhibitions, such as:

  • The 7th Yokohama Triennale in Japan
  • The Taipei Biennial in Taiwan
  • The 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia
  • The 23rd Biennale of Sydney
  • The Hayward Gallery in London

Ultimately, the historical significance of kaumakan’s oeuvre lies in its capacity to facilitate a collective healing process. Her sculptures and installations are not static objects of beauty but active participants in the preservation of Paiwan identity. Through her work, the trauma of environmental catastrophe is transmuted into a powerful testament to survival, ensuring that the stories, rituals, and ancestral spirits of her people continue to be woven into the consciousness of the modern world.
