This canvas was painted after the painter’s return from Paris in 1880. A soft shade brushes the terrace where an elderly lady is resting in a cool morning and beyond the low wall eyes can embrace the landscape washed by the sun, with the latter making the blue of the sea brighter. Leto drew on social subjects related to life in Paris and then he felt the need to try himself again with the themes of landscape painting which had made him famous during his stay in Ischia, an island off the Gulf of Naples.

antonino leto, also known as antonio leto, was an italian painter born in capri, italy in 1844 and died in 1913. he painted mainly genre/landscape subjects in an impressionistic style. in 1861, he moved to palerme to study under l. barba and luigi lojacono. he adopted the style and subject matter of filippo palizzi.

artistic career

in 1864, he moved to naples where he was attracted to the scuola of resina style of painting fostered by giuseppe de nittis.
he took lessons from adriano cecioni and painted both in oil, tempera, and watercolor.
by 1870, he had won a silver medal at the mosta artistica of palermo with the painting il ritorno dal pascolo and a gold medal at the regional exposition of siracusa for la bufera.
in 1872, he sent a winter's day in sicily to the brera exposition.

alla villa borgese (1874) - exhibited at the 10th promotrice in naples
la raccolta delle olive (1874-75) - won a sicilian stipend to study in rome
case a viareggio, ponte di santi trinita, and passeggiata alle cascine (1876-1878) - painted during his time in florence
vecchia parigi and le bois de boulogne (1880) - painted in paris, where he was invited by a. goupil of the goupil gallery
