Böcklin painted the first version of "Island of the Dead" in 1880, and he produced several different versions of the subject between 1880 and 1886. The painting is now located at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Commission
The first version of "Island of the Dead" was commissioned by Marie Berna as a memorial to her late husband. Böcklin later wrote to her, 'you will be able to dream yourself into the world of dark shadows.'Interpretation
