cícero dias de carvalho, a renowned brazilian painter, was born in 1907 in são josé de mipibu. he moved to rio de janeiro in 1922, marking the beginning of his artistic journey at the escola nacional de belas artes. in 1929, he traveled to europe, where he studied at the académie de la grande chaumière in paris.rise to prominence and notable works
upon his return to brazil in 1931, cícero dias de carvalho became a pivotal figure in the brazilian modernist movement, alongside notable artists like alberto guignard, candido portinari, and ismael nery. his participation in the group exhibition salão revolucionário (revolutionary salon) at the escola nacional de belas artes in rio de janeiro solidified his position within the movement.- notable exhibitions:
- 1953: retrospective at the museu de arte moderna do rio de janeiro
- 1992: exhibition at the museu lasar segall
influence and legacy
cícero dias de carvalho mentored several painters, including iberê camargo, vera mindlin, and alcides da rocha miranda. in 1944, he was invited by juscelino kubitschek to establish a drawing and painting program at the instituto de belas artes (now guignard university of art of minas gerais) in belo horizonte.later life and passing
