This model represents a project for a new theatre in Sicily, near the ruins of the town of Gibellina (in the province of Trapani) and the cretto realised by the artist Alberto Burri. Francesco Venezia structured his project along two axes: the immersion of the theatre within the hilly landscape and the choice not to us the cretto as a backdrop, turning the view toward the valley instead. This move required the creation of an artificial slope, in contrast with the natural incline toward the cretto. The space of the theatre was thus created by excavating an elongated form into the earth, a sort of cradle or boat moored on the hillside. Francesco Venezia’s work is inspired by a passion for classical studies and the history of architecture, an attention toward the existing and the historic contexts that define the settings of his projects, coupled with a masterful use of natural light and the expressive qualities of materials.
