Estudio para una ambientación (Study for an atmosphere) shows a man smoking in a bar. It seems to be the bar located on the streets Mariano Bárcena and Juan Álvarez in the city of Guadalajara, meeting place of artists and intellectuals, which he regularly attended. The character’s figure can barely be seen because of the lit cigarette’s effect, providing a sense of intimacy to the atmosphere. The color is limited to shades of blue that become lighter due to the effect of a transverse light that accentuates the composition, marked by distinct geometric planes. Four small red angles, located on each of the painting’s corners, suggest the presence of a witness recording the scene through a photographic or video camera.
