アーティストの略歴
Johann Christian Vollaert (1708 - 1769): Painter of Tranquility and Detail
Johann Christian Vollaert (before 1708-1769) was born in Leipzig and was probably mainly active in Dresden, after his artistic training under Johann Alexander Thiele (1685-1752). His works were usually composed as counterparts and mostly appear in rather small formats. Dutch masters served the artist as the most important stylistic and thematic source of inspiration; works by Jan Griffier (c. 1652-1718), for instance, may have been accessible to the artist at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. Vollaert especially painted mountain and river landscapes under different time and seasonal conditions. Besides, he often added ruins or appropriate figures to his compositions. Works by the artist can be found, for instance, at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich. He was a prolific artist who produced numerous paintings reflecting the prevailing Baroque style, characterized by dramatic lighting and ornate ornamentation. His meticulous attention to detail—particularly in rendering foliage and water—became a hallmark of his oeuvre. Vollaert’s artistic vision was profoundly influenced by the Romantic movement, which championed emotion and imagination alongside observation. However, he remained firmly rooted in classical traditions, prioritizing accuracy and compositional balance. Despite producing relatively few monumental works, Vollaert achieved considerable renown for his landscapes, which continue to captivate viewers with their serene beauty and masterful execution. His paintings convey a sense of contemplative stillness, inviting contemplation on the sublime grandeur of nature.- Notable Works: “A River Landscape” featuring farm workers and animals below a farm, a distant town beyond; “Winter Scene With Numerous Figures”; “Landscape with laundry women”.
