Through these pieces, as if they were parts of the same body, I present matter and volume. As a result of studies on the strength exercised upon the material, willing to tension to the limit, as if they were dense liquids that spill over their own capacity. Gravity, weight, and tensions are presented in a search for some instable balance: the body that weighs and the torsions, many times looking solid and closed, slowly fall like a dense and organic calm. The research on matter mix with my own curiosity on human bodies and their relationship with the creation of rules, like a way to standardize behaviors, reinforcing sanctions, where the collective imagery symbolically establishes what is a body and how it must be represented, thus showing how those social representations of the bodies generate power mechanisms.

アーティストの略歴

The Fluidity of Form: The Artistic Journey of Mónica Sartori

Born in the historic cradle of Rome, Italy, in 1967, Mónica Sartori carries within her a dual heritage that informs her profound approach to materiality and space. Though her beginnings were rooted in Italian culture, her life took a transformative turn when she moved to Argentina with her family at the age of two. This relocation provided the cultural backdrop for her artistic maturation, leading her to study at the prestigious ENBAPP - Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School of Fine Arts. There, she honed her expertise as a professor of drawing and sculpture, developing a technical mastery that would eventually allow her to push the boundaries of traditional sculptural disciplines.

Sartori’s work is characterized by an extraordinary command over non-traditional materials, which she manipulates to evoke the visceral qualities of the human condition. Her practice is not merely about shaping matter, but about exploring the tension between stability and collapse. In her evocative series, such as Sin título, de la serie Derrame [Untitled, from the series Spill], she treats materials as if they were parts of a living, breathing organism. She investigates the strength exercised upon these substances, pushing them to their physical limits to simulate dense liquids that appear to overflow their own capacity. Through this lens, gravity and weight become protagonists in a delicate dance of unstable balance.

The Intersection of Matter and Social Identity

Beyond the tactile allure of her sculptures, Sartori’s art serves as a profound meditation on the relationship between the physical body and social structures. Her research into matter is deeply intertwined with an inquiry into how human bodies interact with established rules and collective imagery. She explores how society attempts to standardize behaviors and reinforce sanctions through the symbolic representation of the body, effectively using her sculptural forms to mirror the power mechanisms that govern our existence. In her hands, a solid-looking torsion or a heavy, drooping mass becomes a metaphor for the weight of social expectations and the organic struggle for autonomy.

The artist’s career is marked by significant participation in prestigious international art programs and exhibitions that have brought her unique vision to a global audience. Her professional trajectory includes:

  • The PAC Project Artist Program at Galería Gachi Prieto in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which allowed her to further refine her experimental techniques.
  • The Yeca exhibition at Fundación Cazadores in 2021, showcasing her continued relevance in the contemporary Argentine art scene.
  • The Biennale Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea at the Francesco Gonzaga Diocesan Museum in Italy in 2017, a poignant return to her ancestral roots through the medium of contemporary sculpture.

Through this seamless blend of technical innovation and sociological depth, Mónica Sartori continues to captivate the art world. Her ability to transform unexpected materials into poetic expressions of weight, tension, and organic calm ensures her place as a vital voice in contemporary sculptural discourse, reminding us that even in the most rigid structures, there is a constant, flowing search for balance.
