From the Artist: If I had to describe the effect of this time on my work I would say that it has brought me clearer understanding and familiarity with my daily art practice. This Still Life is from a series of daily still life paintings begun when Covid-19 first began affecting the New York population and before it was identified as a pandemic. Most of the paintings in the series are completed but a few are still in progress, though I stopped making daily still life paintings in May 2020. Most of the series is not stacked fruit as these are. The stacking emerged one day while I was feeling quite overwhelmed by my need to paint daily and the 24 seven nature of teaching Pre-K to 8 Art remotely via the internet combined with both of my college age children studying online while we sheltered in place. I was setting up the fruits to paint while attending a Zoom meeting and trying to negotiate all that was on my plate. Stacking and balancing fruit neatly became a metaphor for the situation we found ourselves in. These paintings are an example of me creating as coping. Through making the daily still lives and several subsequent series I found a sense of normalcy and calm. My art practice buoys me and stacking the fruits kept me challenged, focused, and gave clarity to balancing the circumstances of 2020.

Биография художника

A Life Immersed in the Hudson River Valley

Carol Herd-Rodriguez is an American painter whose artistic journey has been deeply interwoven with the landscapes and light of the Hudson River Valley. Born in Peekskill, New York, in 1954, her connection to this region isn’t merely geographical—it's a foundational element of her creative spirit. Growing up amidst the “river towns” of Westchester County instilled within her an enduring reverence for the natural world, a sentiment that would blossom into a lifelong artistic pursuit. Even as a child, Herd-Rodriguez experienced the landscape with a unique intensity, walking backward up hills to capture glimpses of the riverbanks on her way to school, foreshadowing a career dedicated to translating these visual experiences onto canvas. This early immersion wasn’t simply about observing; it was about *feeling* the environment—the weight of the rocks, the power of the water, and the subtle shifts in light that define the Hudson Valley's character.

From Classroom to Canvas: A Dedicated Practice

Herd-Rodriguez’s dedication to art extends beyond her personal studio practice. For many years, she served as a Pre-K through 8th grade art teacher, nurturing creativity in young minds while simultaneously honing her own skills. This dual role speaks volumes about her belief in the transformative power of artistic expression and the importance of continuous learning. Her daily commute on the Metro North train provided another crucial source of inspiration. Traveling between Spuyten Duyvil and Northern Westchester, she would paint the ever-changing views from the window, capturing fleeting moments of beauty amidst the rhythm of everyday life. These “train paintings,” as they’ve become known, are characterized by flattened forms, simplified shapes, and an imaginative use of color—a style that evokes a childlike sense of wonder and magical realism. This consistent practice – painting daily in her studio alongside the Hudson River – demonstrates a profound commitment to her craft and a desire to continually explore the nuances of her surroundings.

Nature, Dreams, and Evocative Symbolism

The core of Herd-Rodriguez’s work lies in its meditation on nature, dreams, and wonder. Her paintings aren't simply representations of landscapes; they are emotional responses to them—attempts to capture the *essence* of a place rather than merely its appearance. She communicates beauty found in the ordinary, elevating commonplace scenes into something extraordinary through her unique artistic vision. Her still life works, such as “A Still Life 40, Pear on Top,” demonstrate this ability to find profound meaning in simple subjects. The paintings often feature abstracted forms and a vibrant palette, suggesting an inner landscape that complements the external world. This interplay between reality and imagination is central to her artistic style. She isn’t interested in photographic realism; instead, she seeks to convey a feeling—a sense of peace, tranquility, or awe—through color, form, and composition.

Recognition and Community Engagement

Over the course of three decades, Carol Herd-Rodriguez has established herself as a respected figure within the art community. Her work is held in numerous corporate and private collections nationally, a testament to its enduring appeal and artistic merit. She is an active member of the Peekskill Arts Alliance, further demonstrating her commitment to fostering creativity and collaboration within her local region. Her participation in open studio events allows her to connect directly with audiences, sharing her passion for art and engaging in meaningful dialogue about her work. This engagement highlights her belief that art should be accessible and inclusive—a source of inspiration and connection for all. Her website, CarolHerd-Rodriguez.com, serves as a portal into her artistic world, offering viewers a glimpse into the landscapes that have shaped her vision and the paintings that capture their beauty. The Blue Door Art Center also showcases her work, providing another avenue for audiences to experience her evocative creations.
