Designer Bernard Chandran from Malaysia was chosen to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. Bernard chose to create his design in fine ‘songket’ – a royal Malay brocade, handwoven and patterned with gold and silver threads. He drew inspiration from Malay ‘kerawang’ – a style of traditional embroidery that involves cutting away the base-cloth to create a lace effect, contemporising the look with a geometric feel. The strapless dress is carefully structured and the floor-length coat is embroidered with wool yarn. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

Биография художника

Bernard Chandran: A Pioneer of Malay Fashion

Bernard Chandran, born on February 27, 1968, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, embodies a remarkable fusion of cultural heritage and artistic ambition within the realm of fashion design. His upbringing—rooted in Indian and Chinese traditions— instilled a distinctive worldview that profoundly shaped his innovative approach to crafting garments and textiles. Initially pursuing accounting studies, Chandran’s true passion led him to enroll at the International Fashion Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur in 1988, followed by postgraduate studies at the Paris American Academy in 1989 – experiences that would prove instrumental in shaping his future trajectory.
  • Early Life & Education: Growing up amidst a multicultural environment fostered an appreciation for diverse artistic expressions and fueled his determination to pursue creative endeavors.
  • Parisian Breakthrough: Chandran’s relocation to Paris marked the commencement of his illustrious fashion career, culminating in pivotal victories – namely, securing both the Silk Cut Young Designers Award and the Open European Contest for Look of the Year 2000 – establishing him as the inaugural non-European recipient of this prestigious accolade.

The Revival of Malay Tradition Through Innovation

Returning to Malaysia in 1993, Chandran established his eponymous brand, initiating a transformative movement within Malaysian fashion by reimagining traditional Malay attire with groundbreaking techniques and materials. His visionary use of embellishments—particularly intricate batik prints and vibrant silks—captured the imagination of discerning clientele and garnered acclaim from influential figures like Michelle Yeoh and Lady Gaga, cementing his position as a trailblazer who championed cultural preservation alongside stylistic experimentation.
  • Brand Establishment: Chandran’s brand quickly gained recognition for its daring reinterpretations of Malay heritage, attracting attention from celebrities and elevating Malaysian fashion on the global stage.
  • Recognition & Awards: He received the Dato' Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) honorific in 2006 from Sultan Ahmad Shah Sultan Abu Bakar, acknowledging his contributions to the field and solidifying his legacy as a visionary designer.

International Influence & Artistic Achievements

Chandran’s influence extended beyond Malaysia's borders, culminating in appearances at London Fashion Week (2000) and the inauguration of flagship boutiques in Kuala Lumpur (2003) and Paris (2007). Notably, he designed attire for Malaysian athletes participating in the 2012 London Olympics—a testament to his commitment to supporting national pride—and was honored with the Designer of the Year Award at the Malaysia Fashion Awards in 2017. Furthermore, Chandran’s artistic endeavors included a daring collection featuring exclusively black models, advocating for inclusivity and challenging conventional aesthetic norms.
  • Fashion Week Debut: His presence at London Fashion Week signaled his arrival as a prominent figure on the international fashion scene.
  • Cultural Advocacy: Chandran’s commitment to diversity in fashion demonstrated his belief in artistic expression as a catalyst for social change.

A Retrospective Celebration & Continued Artistic Exploration

In 2018, Bernard Chandran commemorated his career with a retrospective exhibition showcasing his most iconic designs—a celebration of three decades dedicated to redefining Malay contemporary fashion. Subsequently, he embarked on another artistic journey with the debut of *MYTH Evolution*, followed by its sequel *MYTH Creation* at Christie’s in London in 2025 – continuing his exploration of creative concepts and pushing boundaries within both fashion and art. Chandran's unwavering ethos remains: “Expect the unexpected from Bernard Chandran.”
