Hans K. Schuler (1874-1951) was a German-American sculptor known for monumental works & the 1906 ‘Submarine Deutschland’ relief. His Baltimore/DC monuments highlight early 20th-century art.
One of two blockade-running German merchant submarines, Deutschland arrived for the first time in the US at Baltimore on July 9, 1916. Having crossed the Atlantic virtually empty, some of her iron ballast was used to create commemorative medals, such as this one.Hatted bust to left; within curve around: U - DEUTSCHLAND.- PAUL KÖNIG KAPITÄN; 9 JULI/ 1916
