In 1958, the Polish government invited the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint’) to return to care for Jews repatriated from the Soviet Union. At this time, the Joint provided food packages and medical assistance for elderly members of the Jewish population, aid made necessary by the fact that the majority of Holocaust survivors did not have living family members to look after them. As a result of negotiations with the Polish government, the Joint undertook to build a modern home for the aged in Warsaw, which opened in 1963.
