The project also showcases an interactive installation created in collaboration with Beatriz Cortez, another Los Angeles-based artist from El Salvador. Lastly, a number of drawings are displayed as part of the project. They form a small pencil drawing series inspired by Tseng Kwong Chi, who has been forgotten in the art world after his death from AIDS in 1990. The display is a tribute to the lives and works of artists who died as a result of AIDS and sheds light on their absence. The artist deconstructs the word ‘queer’ which for many is still a new and unfamiliar term.

Биография художника

Kang Seung-yoon: Echoes of Memory and Minimalism

Kang Seung-yoon, also known as Seungyoon or Yoon, is a Korean artist whose work delves into themes of remembrance, loss, and quiet contemplation. Born in Busan in 1994, his artistic journey began amidst the vibrant cultural landscape of South Korea, shaping his distinctive visual language—characterized by striking simplicity and profound emotional resonance. While primarily recognized as a singer-songwriter and leader of the boy band Winner, Kang’s creative pursuits extend far beyond the stage, establishing him as a multifaceted talent deeply invested in exploring complex ideas through artistic expression.
  • Early Influences: Kang Seung-yoon's formative years were marked by exposure to Korean literature and art, fostering an appreciation for subtle narratives and evocative imagery. Notably, he cites Yoon Dongju’s poetry as a significant inspiration—a poet whose melancholic verses grapple with themes of exile and longing, mirroring the artist’s own introspective approach.
  • The Superstar K2 Experience: Kang's breakthrough arrived in 2010 through the popular Korean singing competition Superstar K2. This platform propelled him into the spotlight, introducing his musical talent to a wider audience and solidifying his commitment to pursuing artistic endeavors alongside his music career.
  • YG Entertainment & Winner Formation: Following his success on Superstar K2, Kang signed with YG Entertainment in 2011, initiating his collaboration with producer Teddy Park—a partnership that would ultimately lead to the formation of Winner. This group became a cornerstone of Korean pop culture, showcasing Kang’s leadership qualities and furthering his artistic development.
Kang Seung-yoon's artistic style is defined by an unwavering dedication to minimalism. He frequently employs monochrome prints and drawings—often referencing landscapes or architectural structures—to convey powerful emotions without resorting to overt ornamentation. This deliberate restraint serves as a conduit for conveying profound reflections on time, place, and human experience. His pieces resonate with viewers through their quiet beauty and subtle symbolism, inviting contemplation about the passage of time and the importance of preserving memory.
  • Notable Works: Among his most acclaimed creations is “Portable Plane Sundial,” a striking installation that utilizes photographic prints to explore the concept of stillness amidst urban environments. The artwork’s muted palette and geometric composition evoke a sense of melancholy and remembrance—a deliberate homage to Tseng Kwong Chi, a Taiwanese artist whose work similarly investigates themes of solitude and cultural identity.
  • Acting Roles & Television Appearances: Kang has expanded his artistic horizons into acting, securing roles in television series such as “Prison Playbook,” “Kairos,” and “Grid.” His performance in “Prison Playbook” garnered critical acclaim and earned him the ‘Best Male Actor’ award at the K-Web Fest Awards—demonstrating his versatility as an entertainer and furthering his artistic exploration.
  • The Mask Singer Phenomenon: Perhaps Kang's most memorable achievement came during MBC’s “King of Mask Singer,” where he captivated audiences with his charismatic stage persona and remarkable vocal abilities. Achieving six consecutive wins—a record-breaking feat—solidified his status as a cultural icon and cemented his legacy as one of Korea’s foremost performers.
Kang Seung-yoon's contribution to Korean art extends beyond individual creations; he embodies the spirit of contemporary artistic inquiry—a commitment to exploring complex emotions through understated visual language. His work stands as a testament to the enduring power of simplicity and remembrance, inviting viewers to engage in thoughtful reflection on the human condition. He continues to inspire aspiring artists with his dedication to craft and his unwavering pursuit of artistic excellence.
