Palmares was not completely destroyed after the assassination of Zumbi in 1695. In the early eighteenth century, the quilombo’s leadership supported Camoanga, who was certainly Zumbi’s successor. Before him, people talked of Mouza, another commander. Camoanga was eventually murdered by the troops that had continued to fight in the mountain ranges of Pernambuco. Several remnants of the attempts to destroy the quilombo migrated to Paraíba and Sergipe. The pioneering research of Edison Carneiro, Ernesto Ennes, Décio Freitas, Ivan Alves Filho and others were essential to uncover the collective history of an organization that has become a symbol of Black rebellion and desire for freedom.
