Nel 1524, terminati i lavori per la grande impresa decorativa di San Giovanni Evangelista, Correggio viene incaricato dal monaco benedettino Placido del Bono di eseguire per la cappella di famiglia posta nella medesima chiesa due tele: il Compianto su Cristo Morto e il Martirio dei Santi Placido, Flavia, Eutichio, Vittorino.Nel Compianto Correggio adotta una soluzione iconografica del tutto nuova: Cristo, appena deposto dalla croce, giace a terra col capo abbandonato sul grembo della madre, il corpo livido, i piedi e le mani ancora contratti per la tensione dei chiodi.
