Biografija umetnika

Clarissa Tossin: Bridging Cultures Through Material Engagement

Clarissa Tossin (born 1973, Porto Alegre, Brazil) is a Brazilian visual artist who employs installation, video, performance, sculpture and photography to negotiate the hybridization of cultures and the persistence of difference. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1973 and currently residing in Los Angeles, USA, Tossin received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2009. She has held exhibitions individually at Harvard Radcliffe Graduate Studies (Harvard University, USA), The Blanton Museum of Art (Austin, USA), and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Her work has been recognized by The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston. She received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant in 2019. Tossin’s artistic endeavors encompass a multifaceted approach—weaving together sculptural explorations with cinematic narratives and performance pieces—all underpinned by a deep engagement with the materiality of culture and its role in shaping identity and spatial understanding.

Early Influences & Artistic Formation

Tossin's formative years were marked by exposure to Brasília’s modernist architecture, which instilled within her an early fascination for the implicit histories embedded in built environments—particularly those that silence colonial violence or project myths of progress. This initial encounter with architectural narratives profoundly impacted her artistic trajectory, fostering a critical perspective on dominant cultural representations and prompting her to seek alternative voices and perspectives. Her MFA studies at CalArts solidified this commitment to experimental media and collaborative processes, equipping her with the tools necessary to interrogate complex socio-political issues through innovative artistic mediums.

Major Artistic Projects & Recurring Themes

Tossin’s oeuvre is characterized by a consistent exploration of themes related to cultural hybridity, colonialism's enduring legacy on material culture, and the intersection between space exploration and ecological concerns. Notable projects include *Encontro das Águas* (Meeting of Waters), a sculptural installation reflecting upon the confluence of indigenous and Western artistic traditions; *White Marble Everyday*, which examines the pervasive influence of consumerism and globalization on artistic production; and *Streamlined: Belterra, Amazonia / Alberta, Michigan*, a collaborative project exploring the materiality of place and the impact of extractive industries on marginalized communities. Recurring motifs—such as repurposed Amazon delivery boxes and NASA imagery—serve as symbolic anchors within her artworks, prompting viewers to contemplate questions of responsibility and sustainability.

Critical Recognition & Institutional Presence

Tossin’s artistic achievements have garnered considerable acclaim from prominent institutions worldwide. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Harvard Art Museums, Frye Art Museum, and La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, demonstrating her ability to engage with pressing contemporary issues through inventive artistic expression. Furthermore, she received prestigious grants from organizations like The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and Artadia Los Angeles Award, recognizing her dedication to pushing boundaries within the art world. Her inclusion in biennials such as Shanghai Biennale and Prospect.6 Triennial underscores her significance as a voice within the broader dialogue concerning artistic innovation and social engagement.

Current Artistic Practice & Future Directions

Currently, Tossin focuses on investigating how scientific knowledge—specifically NASA’s mapping of celestial bodies—intersects with capitalist-driven environmental exploitation. Her recent projects utilize recycled Amazon delivery boxes as material components, blending sculptural explorations with cinematic narratives and performance pieces to interrogate complex socio-political issues through innovative artistic mediums. She continues to champion collaborative processes rooted in indigenous epistemologies, challenging conventional notions of progress and advocating for a more nuanced understanding of humanity’s relationship with the natural world—a mission that aligns seamlessly with her commitment to fostering dialogue across cultures and confronting urgent environmental challenges.
