This installation comprises a mixture of historical archive photographs sourced by the artist as well as personal photographs donated by the inmates and families Martins interacted with. The book that supports the visual work is a facsimile copy of an inmate’s diary, which the artist intervened on, and which was written especially for this project.Martins forged a close friendship with the inmate that wrote this journal. He visited him over two years, in his cell, during family days and during legal visits. Legal visits are normally only attended by inmates’ legal representatives but HMP Birmingham enabled the artist to make use of this facility so he could spend one-on-one time with the inmate in question. This enabled Martins to share the work he was producing with him and edit the diary.

Edgar Martins: A Weaver of Memory and Urban Echoes

Born in Évora, Portugal, in 1977, Edgar Martins has emerged as a compelling voice within contemporary photography, distinguished by his evocative explorations of memory, conflict, and the layered realities of urban landscapes. His work transcends mere documentation; it’s an immersive experience, inviting viewers to contemplate the human condition through carefully constructed narratives and a distinctive visual language. Initially drawn to social sciences alongside his burgeoning photographic talent at the University of the Arts in London and later refining his craft at the Royal College of Art, Martins has cultivated a unique perspective shaped by both academic rigor and a profound sensitivity to image-making.

Martins’s artistic journey is marked by a deliberate engagement with difficult subjects. His most celebrated series, ‘Our War,’ stands as a testament to this commitment. Rather than offering straightforward depictions of conflict, Martins delves into the lived experiences of those affected – often through fragmented memories and invented scenarios. This approach isn't about glorifying war but about acknowledging its enduring scars on individuals and communities. The project’s success was recognized with the Photographer of the Year award at the Sony World Photography Awards in 2023, a significant validation of his artistic vision.

Beyond ‘Our War,’ Martins consistently returns to the theme of urban spaces, dissecting their complexities and revealing hidden narratives. His photographs aren’t simply images of buildings and streets; they are investigations into the social dynamics, histories, and emotional resonances embedded within these environments. He often employs a monochrome palette, intensifying the mood and drawing attention to texture, light, and shadow – elements that contribute significantly to the series' haunting atmosphere.

Early Influences and Artistic Development

While Martins’s formal training at prestigious institutions like the University of the Arts and Royal College of Art provided a solid foundation in photographic technique, his artistic development appears to have been shaped by a broader range of influences. His upbringing in Macau, a region steeped in cultural fusion between East and West, likely fostered an appreciation for diverse perspectives and visual traditions. This early exposure undoubtedly contributed to his ability to synthesize seemingly disparate elements into cohesive and thought-provoking images.

Furthermore, Martins’s work demonstrates a clear engagement with the history of photography itself. He frequently references the techniques and approaches of masters like Diane Arbus and Robert Frank, while simultaneously forging his own distinct style. The influence of documentary photography is evident in his meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to capturing authentic moments, yet he avoids simply replicating established conventions. Instead, he uses these influences as a springboard for creating something entirely new.

Key Works and Recognition

Edgar Martins’s career has been punctuated by several significant achievements that have garnered critical acclaim and cemented his position within the contemporary art world. The ‘Our War’ series remains his most widely recognized work, captivating audiences with its poignant exploration of trauma and memory. The project's success was further underscored by its inclusion in numerous prestigious collections, including those of the V&A (London), the National Media Museum (Bradford, UK), RIBA (London), and the Dallas Museum of Art (USA).

Beyond ‘Our War,’ Martins’s work has been featured in exhibitions around the globe, showcasing his versatility and artistic range. His exploration of urban landscapes, often presented in stark monochrome, consistently demonstrates a keen eye for composition and an ability to evoke powerful emotions through subtle visual cues. The artist's commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventional approaches to photography has earned him recognition from leading institutions and collectors alike.

Looking Ahead: A Continuing Dialogue

Edgar Martins’s artistic practice is characterized by a persistent interrogation of the human experience, particularly in relation to conflict and memory. His work invites viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and engage with complex narratives that often lie beneath the surface of everyday life. As he continues to explore new themes and techniques, it's clear that Martins will remain a vital voice within contemporary photography – one who consistently challenges our perceptions and compels us to reconsider the ways in which we understand ourselves and the world around us.
