One of India’s leading artists as well as a writer and pedagogue, Gulammohammed Sheikh is known for weaving into his works layers of references drawn from literature, art history, politics and autobiography.Gandhi and Gama (2014) is a triptych that imagines a confrontation across centuries between two key protagonists in the story of colonialism in India. In it, Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, whose arrival in Malabar in the 15th century inaugurated the European scramble for India, looks across a mappa mundi (a medieval hand-drawn map of the world) at a young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi contemplating the demise of the British Raj in the 20th century. The mappa mundi is a recurrent motif in Sheikh’s works. In several paintings, he has used a combination of digital collage and painting to rework these medieval European imaginings of the world by incorporating elements drawn from India.

A Tapestry of Memory and Myth: The Art of Gulammohammed Sheikh

In the vibrant landscape of contemporary Indian art, few voices resonate with as much narrative depth and historical resonance as that of Gulammohammed Sheikh. Born in 1937 in the historic town of Surendranagar, Gujarat, Sheikh’s artistic consciousness was forged in a crucible of rich cultural heritage and the burgeoning modernist movements of post-independence India. His work does not merely exist on canvas; it breathes through layers of autobiography, literature, and political history, creating a visual language that is as much about the act of remembering as it is about the act of painting. As a pivotal figure of the Baroda Group and a member of the influential ‘1890’ collective, Sheikh helped steer Indian modernism away from purely abstract experiments toward a more nuanced, figurative storytelling that embraced the complexities of identity and tradition.

Sheikh’s academic journey provided the intellectual scaffolding for his expansive creative vision. After completing his studies at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, he further refined his sensibilities at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. This dual exposure to the deep-rooted traditions of India and the rigorous formal training of the West allowed him to develop a style that is uniquely hybrid. He mastered the ability to weave together disparate threads—the meticulous observation of realism, the spiritual weight of symbolic representation, and the fragmented logic of collage. His canvases often function like mappa mundi, or medieval world maps, where geography, myth, and personal memory intersect in a dense, evocative topography.

The Symbiosis of History and Symbolism

To enter a painting by Sheikh is to step into a world where time is fluid. He possesses a singular talent for layering historical epochs, bringing figures from vastly different centuries into a shared, contemplative space. A profound example of this is found in his triptych Gandhi and Gama, where he orchestrates a silent confrontation between the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama and a young Mohandas Gandhi. Through this work, Sheikh explores the heavy shadows of colonialism and the enduring struggle for social justice, using the imagery of the mappa mundi to ground these historical titans within a larger, cosmic framework of human movement and encounter.

His visual vocabulary is deeply informed by the folk traditions of his youth, particularly the Kaavad—the portable wooden shrines used by itinerant storytellers in Rajasthan. These structures, which unfold to reveal sequential narrative panels, serve as a spiritual blueprint for his much larger-scale compositions. Within his paintings, one might find:

  • Sacred Motifs: The use of shrines and religious iconography to explore themes of faith and transcendence.
  • Political Allegory: The inclusion of figures like Gandhi to represent moral fortitude and the evolution of the Indian nation.
  • Personal Narrative: Elements of autobiography that transform personal landscapes into universal explorations of human existence.
  • Organic Forms: A mastery of vibrant, flowing shapes that suggest the pulse of cityscapes and the rhythm of nature.

Legacy and the Architecture of Modernism

Beyond his individual canvases, Sheikh’s significance lies in his role as a scholar, poet, and pedagogue. His contribution to the discourse of Indian art is immeasurable, having served as an art critic and educator who helped shape the minds of subsequent generations. His work has been celebrated with prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Padmabhushan in 2014, recognizing his monumental impact on the cultural fabric of India. From the halls of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai to international stages like the Barbican Centre in London, his presence continues to command respect.

Ultimately, Gulammohammed Sheikh’s oeuvre stands as a testament to the power of art to act as a bridge. He bridges the gap between the ancient and the contemporary, the local and the global, and the personal and the political. His paintings are not static images but living documents—vibrant, organic, and perpetually unfolding—that invite every viewer to lose themselves in the beautiful, complex architecture of worlds within worlds.
