NEMO Science Museum
In 1939, Philips introduced the electric razor: the Philishave type SC 7733. This design by engineer Alexandre Horowitz was nicknamed ‘the cigar’. The device consists of a Bakelite rod-shaped holder with a 5 watt self-contained electric motor to which the shaving head is mounted. This very thin shaving head, measuring just 0.09 millimetre, is made of tempered steel and has slots for guiding the facial hair. Inside the shaving head an electrically driven three-armed shaving blade rotates to cut the facial hair.
