Willem Wissing (1656-1687) was a Dutch portrait artist renowned in England as a successor to Peter Lely. He painted royalty like Charles II & Catherine of Braganza, known for elegant portraits and refined style. His work rivals Godfrey Kneller's.
Portrait of William III, Prince of Orange, stadholder and also King of England since 1689. Headpiece, standing in armor to the right with command staff in the right hand, the left hand resting on a helmet. At the bottom of a dog's head. In the background, a battle. Most likely based on a prototype by Sir Peter Lely.
